Course Outline

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop

Participants will be introduced to the Adobe Photoshop interface. Use of palettes, menus, document windows and the toolbox in organising work flow will be discussed. Participants will learn how to use the selection tools to isolate areas of an image in order to adjust or move them independently.
Assignment: Participants will assemble an image from constituent parts using the selection tools.

Painting in Photoshop
Participants will learn about the painting tools and look at each tool's options. The use of brushes will be discussed and participants will create a custom brush for use with an image. The colour palettes will be introduced and theory of colour modes will be discussed. Participants will be encouraged to work with the Web-safe colour palette.
Assignment: Participants will create an image working only with the brushes and colour palettes.

Using Layers to Organise Artwork
The concept of layers will be introduced to assist participants to organise their artwork. Creating and deleting layers will be demonstrated along with Photoshop's built-in layer effects. Layer blending modes will be introduced to demonstrate different colour changes that can be achieved through layer manipulation. The difference between an artwork layer and a text layer will be shown and participants will begin to work with type in their images. Assignment: Participants will create an image demonstrating their use of layer blending modes.

Type Manipulation in Photoshop
Participants will learn more complex text effects using Photoshop. Typography theory will be discussed briefly in order to give participants a better understanding of how to choose a text style that suits their design. They will be encouraged to experiment with available text styles in order to familiarise themselves with the possibilities of working with type.
Assignment: Participants must create an image that experiments with typography.

Image Retouching
Using Photoshop to retouch scanned images and restore faults will be discussed in full. Aspects covered will include adjusting the colour, brightness and tone of an image. Participants will learn to make adjustments by working on a scanned photo provided by the trainer, who will talk participants through the scanning process. Tools covered will include the Clone, Eraser, Dodge and Burn tools as well as tools for sharpening and blurring areas of an image.
Assignment: Participants must scan in an image and manipulate it in Photoshop.

Filters, History and Actions
Participants will learn how to use filters to apply special effects to an image. The History palette will be used to allow multiple undos within Photoshop and keep track of changes made to an image. Actions will be used to automate repeated steps carried out on an image and increase productivity.
Assignment: Participants must manipulate an image using filters.

Channels, Paths and Masks
Channels will be used to make subtle changes to an image and to save selections for use at a later stage. Paths will be used to create Bezier-pen sketches of complex shapes and convert the paths to selections. Layer masks will be used in order to merge images together and create seamless montages.
Assignment: Participants must manipulate an image using layer masks.

Portfolio
Participants will export images from Photoshop in formats for Web and DVD using industry standard image compression technologies. They will learn how to create an animated slideshow of images for use online.
