Course Overview:
The MA By Project is structured so as to offer a variety of specialist opportunities for study within a context of multi and interdisciplinary debate on issues within design, applied arts and visual culture. The program is appropriate for the development of professional practice as well as preparation for further study.
The MA by Project course titles are designed to provide an appropriate educational experience at postgraduate level through the execution of an approved programme of work, and to provide students who wish to do so, with the necessary research skills to enable them to register for research degrees. Students will be provided with an environment within which they may orientate their own practices in a structured pedagogical context. The seminars and research methods are designed to open up a range of approaches to the analysis and discussion of students' research methodologies and strategies in order to foster both analytical, reflective, and evaluative skills, together with the students' ability to locate their own practice within a critical and theoretical framework.
The course is designed to reflect the development of each student’s project. Each module builds upon the learning experience of the modules already taken, while focussing on a range of issues particular to it and the stage of the courses. Each successive module helps to clarify and deepen the understanding of the project by building on past work in a different way. The effect is cumulative. The developmental nature of the courses are reflected in the approach to assessment: assessment criteria increase with each assessment.

Applicants would normally be expected to possess an undergraduate degree in a practice based visual arts subject such as fine art, photography, film and video, applied art or design. Applicants who can demonstrate that they have gained the equivalent level of proficiency in a visual arts medium through professional experience will also be considered. Consideration will also be given to non-standard qualifications judged by the authorised admitting officer to be of equivalent standard to the minimum entry requirement. In the case of an applicant without a first Degree, they will need to demonstrate an equivalent knowledge and competence from prior experience. The claim should be supported by both direct and indirect evidence. The former is the applicant's own work, such as presented in a portfolio and / or a set test or special essay set by the department prior to interview. Indirect evidence would be reports from at least two referees, attesting to the applicant’s motivation and experience.
