Course Title: MA in Film Production

Duration: 1 Year full-time

Start Date: October

Accreditation: London Metropolitan University

Course Overview:
The overall aim of the programme is to give graduates from visual arts degrees (or equivalent professional experience) the opportunity to develop and expand their own practice through the making of short films. The course encourages students to locate their work within the growing range of documentary, dramatic and experimental filmmaking and to extend the emerging visual grammars of those genres. The course promotes a deep and systematic understanding of the technologies and methodologies applicable to the student’s practice. Ultimately the course offers its students an opportunity to pursue their personal development via practice and intellectual enquiry whilst being attuned to potential audiences, markets and employers. Students are expected to crew on each other’s productions and to work effectively as part of a team, drawing on their peers’ expertise and experience. The course also addresses the need for a thorough understanding of the principles and day-to-day practice of freelance and independent production, as well as grounding in business skills, commercial awareness and entrepreneurship.

Academic Progression Routes:

Students Portfolios:
Many students make contributions to festivals, exhibitions, professional commissions and other external activities whilst undertaking the course. This can be formally recognised, and contribute to the fulfilment of a practical project component of a module.

Employment Prospects:

The TV, film and new media industries are continually evolving, requiring people to have a range of attributes and capabilities. The course encourages students to acquire technical, communication and creative skills alongside commercial awareness. Graduates typically gain employment in the creative industries, or develop freelance filmmaking or artistic careers. Others have progressed in their established jobs with terrestrial or satellite broadcasters, international film production companies etc. by securing promotions through their increased knowledge and experience. The course encourages MA students who wish to invest in their own production facilities and supports them with up to date advice on new technology and production deals. Students are encouraged to develop a show reel that targets a specified market for their work.
